Young Investigator International Track
Dr. Bishoy Faltas is an internationally recognized physician-scientist who has made important contributions to understanding the molecular mechanisms driving the evolution of cancer, particularly in urothelial carcinoma. He is currently Chief Research Officer and Director of Bladder Cancer Research at the Englander Institute for Precision Medicine. He serves as the Gellert Family-John P. Leonard, MD Research Scholar and Associate Professor of Medicine, Cell and Developmental Biology at Weill Cornell Medicine.
The Faltas laboratory focuses on bladder cancer to understand the complex biological mechanisms that underlie the evolution of human cancers. His work on the role of the APOBEC3 family of mutagenic enzymes is leading to novel models of cancer evolution with the goal of inhibiting these “evolutionary drivers” of cancer. His research program employs novel experimental tools and models with a consistent vision to translate these fundamental discoveries into clinical interventions that improve patient outcomes. His investigation of germline mutations in urothelial cancer patients has established new standards for clinical testing, while his studies on the role of FGFR3 mutations have directly influenced the development of targeted therapies currently being evaluated in clinical trials. This bench-to-bedside approach is evident in the lab’s commitment to advancing early-phase and innovative clinical trials, striving to bring scientific discoveries directly to patients who need them the most.
Dr. Faltas’s work has been recognized by prestigious awards such as the ASCO Young Investigator Award, the AACR NextGen Star Award, and the ASCI Young Physician-Scientist Award. He has authored numerous articles in high-impact journals, reflecting the broader scientific community's recognition of his research contributions. His work has garnered funding from prestigious sources, such as the NCI R37 MERIT award and the Department of Defense, underscoring the significance of his contributions to cancer research. His leadership extends beyond his lab as he mentors the next generation of physician-scientists, contributes to scientific journals as an editorial board member, and participates in grant review panels.
Dr. Faltas is dedicated to uncovering the intricate mechanisms underpinning cancer evolution. His work is poised to make a substantial impact on the field of oncology and the treatment of bladder cancer, embodying the mission of improving patient care through scientific discovery and improving science through education and mentorship.
